Beautiful but restrained imagery and imagination are undercut by a script that doesn't put enough focus on character. As is often the case, the villain gets a lot more thought than the titular heroine.
The Runaways has a certain garage-band, DIY feel to it, and watching it is like wandering into a small club on an off night and discovering a goddamned fantastic band, before they make it big. This film has all the energy of rock and roll, and a pair of great young actresses working for an inspired writer-director. See it.
