Do we judge this film by the stratospheric expectations? (In which case, it would have to end war and famine.) By its own goals? Those seem high, too, and the film falls short. As two hours of entertainment? If so, there's a lot to praise there, especially the visuals. If only the script was as masterful as the director ...

Beautiful but restrained imagery and imagination are undercut by a script that doesn't put enough focus on character. As is often the case, the villain gets a lot more thought than the titular heroine.

A pathetic adult failure craves the shallow victories and insignificant love enshrined in her high school memories. Like "Bad Teacher," but watchable.
